New York City has gained the amazing distinction of having once banned Big Gulp sodas because they were deemed bad for the public’s health, and now compelling bartenders to serve alcoholic beverages to pregnant women. Apparently pregnant women have a civil right to walk into a private establishment, and engage in an activity that increases the odds that their child will have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FASD) and suffer a lifetime of disability.
The Center for Disease Control says that, “To prevent FASDs, a woman should not drink alcohol while she is pregnant, or when she might get pregnant. This is because a woman could get pregnant and not know for up to 4 to 6 weeks.”
Why would the CDC take such a hard stance against taking even a small nip of the vine while pregnant? The CDC explains on their website, ‘FASDs are completely preventable if a woman does not drink alcohol during pregnancy — so why take the risk?”
But in the weird, weird world of New York City, bartenders must serve pregnant women, but, if not for a court order overturning the City law, McDonald’s employees would not be able to supersize a soda.
Got to love the New York City government’s values.
