Seth Conrad Rich was a 27-year-old DNC staffer who was tragically murdered around 4:30 a.m. on July 10 in NW Washington, D.C., just steps from his front door. Police believe his death to be the result of a robbery gone wrong, despite the fact that all of his personal belongings—including his watch, phone, and wallet—were found on his person.
Given the circumstances surrounding Rich’s death and his employment with the DNC, it’s no surprise that his murder has spawned several conspiracy theories. One of those theories is that Rich was offed by political hitmen for leaking thousands of DNC emails to Wikileaks. It may sound crazy — but Wikileaks founder Julian Assange recently appeared on a Dutch news program and all but said that Rich was indeed his source:
“Whistleblowers go to significant efforts to get us material, and often very significant risks,” Assange said. “As a 27-year-old, works for the DNC, was shot in the back, murdered just a few weeks ago for unknown reasons as he was walking down the street in Washington.”
“That was just a robbery I believe, wasn’t it?” asked the host, referring to the death of DNC data analyst Seth Rich.
“No,”Assange said. “There’s no finding.”
So what are you suggesting?” asked the host.
“I’m suggesting that our sources take risks,” Assange replied. But when asked point-blank whether Rich was a Wikileaks source, Assange refused to confirm or deny it.
On Tuesday, Wikileaks offered a $20,000 reward for information about Rich’s murder. D.C. police are also offering a $25,000 reward for any information that leads to a conviction in the ongoing investigation. However, in a statement released Wednesday, the police said, “At this time, there is no indication that Seth Rich’s death is connected to his employment at the DNC.”
It certainly wouldn’t be the first time a mysterious death occurred just a few degrees removed from Hillary Clinton.
