The wife of Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen was arrested by the FBI on Monday in connection to the mass shooting and charged with obstruction and giving support to a terrorist organization.
Noor Salman appeared in court Tuesday. Her attorney argued that Salman had no prior knowledge of her husband’s attack, but federal officials believe otherwise:
[…] Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg did tell the judge that Salman knew her husband was going to carry out an attack and later lied to Florida police to hinder the investigation.
In the days after the attack, law enforcement sources told NBC News that Salman told investigators she was with him when he bought ammunition and tried to dissuade him from violence.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina said he “knew within days” of the attack that Salman “had some part and aided Omar Mateen in this horrific tragedy.”
Another official said Salman admitted that she had known “for a while” that Mateen wanted to do something violent. A few months prior to the attack, Mateen added Salman’s name to his life insurance policy and made sure she had access to his bank accounts.
Salman was arrested in California, where her family lives. Prosecutors will seek to have her moved to face charges in Florida.
