The United Nations complained Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s budget cuts would make it “impossible” for the organization to continue its essential work:
“The figures presented would simply make it impossible for the U.N. to continue all of its essential work advancing peace, development, human rights and humanitarian assistance,” Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said in a statement Wednesday, according to Reuters.
In case you’re wondering, the United States pays a whopping 22% of the U.N.’s core $5.4 billion budget. In fact, the U.S. is the U.N.’s largest contributor — paying more than 185 other countries combined.
Additionally, the U.S. pays 28.5% of the U.N. $7.9 billion peacekeeping budget.
Trump’s budget proposal cuts nearly a third from U.S. aid and diplomacy budgets, or about $19 billion. He also wants to cap America’s peacekeeping contribution at 25%.
Sound like a great idea; all the U.N. peacekeepers do is cause chaos and rape children.
