Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Sunday his city will sue the Trump administration to block a plan denying them federal funds over its “sanctuary city” status.
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans to cut off funding t Chicago receives for several Federal programs, in response to Chicago Police refusing to enforce immigration laws or allow Federal agents access to city jails.
“Chicago had expected to receive $3.2 million this year from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants, and had planned to devote most of the funding to police vehicles,” Newsweek reports. “The lawsuit contends that the U.S. government cannot ‘commandeer local law enforcement to carry out federal immigration law functions.'”
There is also speculation the Federal government may criminally charge local officials who actively block enforcement of Federal laws.
While Emanuel claims the U.S. government cannot “commandeer local law enforcement to carry out federal” laws, he has done just that in regards to Federal gun laws.
